Gattaca Here We Come

Capable of sequencing a billion base pairs per day this video from Helicos Biosciences shows the coolest piece of technology I’ve seen in a long while.

Just for comparison here is a description of the dominant Sanger sequencing method, which is how I used to get sequences back when I was still pretending to be a molecular biologist.

Yes, that does say “Zero Emission Electric Vehicle” on the back. I’m pleasantly surprised to see things like this out and about.

Our supercomputer Merlin is in the news again. A couple of weeks ago a gaggle of American journalists turned up, apparently on some sort of tour of South Wales (no really). I got pressed into service to help give the machine room tour.
